Sui Jianguo

Sunrise in the East is a monumental public sculpture by acclaimed contemporary artist Sui Jianguo, created as a tribute to the enduring spirit of Hudong Zhonghua. Renowned for his conceptual approach to sculpture, Jianguo combines artistic expression with engineering precision, drawing inspiration from mathematics, industrial craftsmanship, and Chinese cultural traditions.

The sculpture's striking stainless steel form is inspired by the Yang Hui Triangle, integrating ancient mathematical principles with the structural language of modern LNG shipbuilding. Its polished surfaces capture and refract changing light, while the exposed welded structure celebrates the craftsmanship and technical expertise behind its construction.

Balancing symbolism with engineering, the sculpture contrasts a pointed cone representing limitless aspiration with a circular base that reflects strength, resilience, and deep industrial roots. Visitors are invited into an immersive interior where music, a rotating globe, and engraved milestones create a contemplative journey through the history and achievements of Hudong Zhonghua.

UAP | Armetal collaborated on the technical development, fabrication, and installation of Sunrise in the East, helping transform the artist's vision into a landmark that brings together art, mathematics, engineering, and cultural identity.
