Tom Shannon

Dancer is an interactive sculpture by artist and inventor Tom Shannon, whose work explores the relationship between science, natural forces, and human perception. Through movement and balance, the artwork transforms complex physical principles into an engaging public experience at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.

Composed of four polished stainless steel elliptical forms connected by solid shafts, the sculpture responds to the touch of its visitors. A gentle push to the lowest element sets the entire structure into a slow, fluid motion, creating a graceful choreography that continually shifts with each interaction. Inspired by organic forms found in nature, the elliptical shapes recall seeds, cactus leaves, fish, and birds, reinforcing the connection between natural systems and scientific exploration.

The proportions of the sculpture are derived from the mathematical relationships of π (pi) and φ (phi), also known as the golden ratio. These fundamental constants shape the geometry of the work, creating a composition that balances structural precision with visual harmony while reflecting ideas of infinity, movement, and discovery.

Our team collaborated on the technical development, fabrication, and installation of Dancer, helping realise an artwork that seamlessly combines mathematics, engineering, and artistic expression through an interactive sculptural experience.
