SHANGHAI, CHINA

Ripples is a large-scale public artwork by artist Ned Kahn that explores the dynamic forces of the natural world. Known for creating works that reveal the movement of wind, water, light, and air, Kahn uses art to encourage a deeper awareness of the environmental systems that shape our daily lives.

Suspended above the public square, the artwork consists of a 16-metre-diameter stainless steel ring supported by three structural poles and an intricate network of 144 fine cables. Beneath the ring, lightweight elements move with the surrounding air currents, creating an ever-changing display of motion, light, and shadow.

Inspired by the Earth's atmosphere, Ripples draws attention to the delicate nature of the air that surrounds us. As sunlight filters through the suspended mesh and moving elements, shifting patterns are cast across the space below, creating a calming and immersive environment. The installation transforms the square into a place of reflection, inviting visitors to experience the beauty and fragility of natural forces in motion.

UAP | Armetal collaborated with Ned Kahn throughout the technical development, fabrication, and installation of the project, helping bring this ambitious environmental artwork to life.
